The Strongest Magnet You Can Buy

Merry Christmas

After Saturday night Katharinaund Hannah from Bafoussam, and Janna has come from Limbe, we are on Sunday with a student from London who would like to meet for a week UAC, down to the beach at Limbe and have spent the day. In the afternoon we again went into the hot spot restaurant where I ate a double cheeseburger.

Together with students from London have I made around 17:30 clock on the way home to Buea. Although I was never checked on the route to us this should now equal to the to and happen on the way back. As luck would have it the London student had unfortunately left his passport and we had to wait a while to go on to a long discussion and a small fee can. Now I know why Cameroon is one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Everywhere there are traffic controls in which the crowded Vehicles are stopped and continue until a money exchange allowed. As it looks here with officials and penalties Busgeldern I honestly do not know. Large revenue the state will not have there, because the money goes instead into the pockets of corrupt police officers.
morning I'll do with the other volunteers on the road to Kribi where we celebrate Christmas on the beach before we head to the nearest beach a week later to Limbe, where we celebrate New Year's Eve and New Year.
there my technical conditions there are unknown, I do not know when I write next time.
I wish you all a happy, peaceful and relaxing Christmas and (if I can not register) a Happy New Year.

Many Greetings Jannik

My "holiday week" in Buea

Hey You,
in the last week I had once again much free time. Last Saturday was very busy here in Buea, because in the University of Buea The graduation took place. Among the graduates was our mentor, Justine, whose party we were invited in the evening. It was celebrated on the premises of UAC. After some greetings and explanations for their success, which were all very focused on God, there was a large buffet. Because of my health problems (elephant, parasites in the gut and cough), I have put myself to sleep after dinner in my accommodation.
are On Sunday we went to Peter and the Frenchman again to Limbe to the beach, where I was, however, only briefly in the water. My foot just hurt with every step and externally, he resembled more the foot of an elephant. Meanwhile
Fortunately, he has returned to normal size. In the early evening we are still in Limbe has returned in a very nice bar, which opened here recently by a South African. There I had a good, if eaten anything unusual sandwich: bread filled with lettuce, tomato, avocado and french fries. In Limbe, the first time I have also noticed Christmas lights in the form of colorful lights.
had in the week beginning on Monday then I much free time I have spent including reading, internet cafe, or with writing the report for the DED. I also had my French class where we wrote a test on Last Friday have, for I also had to learn.
was held on Wednesday the last event held this year in school. As usual here in Cameroon, the event with plenty (2 hours) started late due to technical problems. These were then, even during the holidays and over much of the radio microphone. In the schoolyard two pavilions were built, among which could contact the parents. At 11 clock could start the event. The school choir sang the national anthem and a few Christmas songs, dances or other children were before recited poems. Very funny was the fashion show that presented the students of the preschool. In the end, even the three best students from each class honored before it for the teachers and staff of UAC was still a little snack.
This was the school year for this year is over and the remaining days of the week I have again spent much time in the internet cafe and read a lot. Positive was that the stability of the power supply had increased again, and only came to brief power outages. These are, if you just at the internet cafe is indeed a bit annoying, but in this case, I'm really happy to have a laptop computer, whose battery prevents data loss. After several hours of power cut on Friday lit a week ago on Saturday night for the first time the street lights the main road from Buea. Whether this now related to the graduation or Christmas time, I do not know. However, I believe, that they have put only the extra repair time before these events and the street lamps light up every night.
Many Greetings
Jannik
PS I do not want to be superstitious, but as I've just written by the better power supply falls out of here again. From Saturday morning until late afternoon Buea remains dark and silent.

Inventor Of The Grapefruit Knife

My last 2 weeks

Hey You,

Now it is already almost two weeks ago that I last wrote. In Regarding working at UAC were relaxed, the last two weeks pretty. It almost seems as if the holiday for us already started earlier. However, we are told this is not right. Based on the evidence, get the students before the Christmas holidays for the first term, the teachers and also our mentors in the office have a lot to do and for this reason the School on Wheels Project is in the last two weeks (up to one hour) failed completely. Why do we have three volunteers to make school care alone can not, I do not know. Also was not told from the start that this week or the next two weeks, no School on Wheels Project, but always only on that day. If we were lucky we got this information during the computer lesson at noon. Otherwise, there was the information only when we went to the office to go to the villages. It really seems to be a great lack of communication and if you ask three people after the deadline for the closing ceremony at the school, you get three different answers.

In physical education we started last week with the long jump. However, at this stage was planned long jump pit is not yet available, so the long jump facility (consisting of two thin foam mattresses and some light sand, the board should represent the jump) was built on the "sports field".

In German class, I continued with the children the numbers, the logic involved, they have quickly understood and thus were able to express figures beyond the tens of thousands without major difficulties. At the end of the hour I had with the students of the 6th Class also have the German Christmas carol "every year" sung. In the expectation still have two more German lessons before the holidays, I wanted the students at least have the translation and perhaps also to teach the second stanza. But this should stick to the plan. On This Friday, the students have cleaned the school yard for the upcoming graduation ceremony, for which also the parents. Next week, then for the students practically holidays if I have understood correctly. Monday and Tuesday is from the school because the teachers' conference on the results of the 1 Terms have and after the closing ceremony on Wednesday, the school closes then until the start of the new year. Although the school on Monday and Tuesday will be closed to me, the teacher of a 5th Class offered my last German class this year to give on Tuesday after it has failed on Friday.

last weekend, which was prolonged due to a Muslim holiday on Monday, we are again down (on Sunday and Monday) with the aid workers by Peter Limbe. Unfortunately the weather was not particularly good on Sunday. It rained and was cool. Peter and a French friend wanted to make wave surfing. However, the weather was also not adequate, as only little wind was blowing and the sea that had so little waves. I tried a little with a small board. If you once caught a wave right, it was fun. However much you spent too much time to wait, because there were few suitable waves and they are then often not desired in the right moment added. On Sunday I was finally able to once again enjoy the European-style noodles. In two Spaniards, in which we have placed a stop on the way from the beach to Buea, there was spaghetti alla carbonara. The food was really great. Sometimes I miss the European food here yet, even if the food is not bad. However, it is always very greasy and with time it gets pretty boring when there is always rice, yams, pasta and bananas with two or three different sauces. Maybe I'm busy cooking in Kleinmachnow also been a bit spoiled. There, even if pasta was in part a big part, was generally more diversified. Thank you to my parents for the good food.

Back to Buea. There was in the last two weeks again major problems with the flowing water. After my return from Bafoussam on Monday evening, we had almost entirely (except small Rinnsälen) to Tuesday next week without running water. In addition, now enhanced power outages have occurred. This Friday there was from early afternoon until evening without electricity. This here is all pretty dark and one is in his ability to spend the time quite limited. During these times, the head lamp is a blessing, something lights up the environment and at least read or letter makes it possible.

On Friday I had my first encounter with a Cameroonian hospital - if one may call it that. In Germany it is more comparable with a general practitioner with more sisters, in which there is still accommodation for the patient. After I had in the past 1 ½ weeks problems with my digestion, I strongly suspect to have any unwanted parasites in my gut. This suspicion was confirmed by a stool sample and I've got two drugs prescribed for it. I also have two days a swollen right foot, probably comes from a sting or bite. For this, I got an ointment prescribed. After payment of 1,900 CFA (about 3 €) we went to the pharmacy where I almost felt at home. A computer as a POS system, and a corresponding Nachschlageverzeichnis me in this form (except in the supermarkets) has not been met. There I could pay for an ointment and "sherbet" some 6,000 CFA (about 9 euros), while these were not even all medications, because some were not available and tomorrow come from Douala.

Actually I had two more German lessons. Since there is no bus with driver I have made myself was walking on the road to Bwitingi for the new school complex before me has collected half-way a school bus. In school, I had to - as I have already written - unfortunately find that the children cleaned the school yard and held no classes would. This was, however, told me again immediately. First it was said that a teacher gets the students. But after 20 minutes it was said that the students would have to clean the school yard for the presentation next Wednesday. So I had to wait again until the bus drove back to Molyko. Overall, this way to spend the time to me far from satisfactory. But it seems here either to give a huge lack of communication or the things here are certainly very spontaneous. Ultimately, it is almost certainly a mix of both, which makes it difficult for me to plan lessons or to generally my days.

I wish you a nice third weekend of Advent. I'm still not really in a festive mood.

Many Greetings

Jannik

PS I hope the blackout ends soon, so I can publish the blog entry soon.

Debbie Travis Closet Organization

weekend in Bafoussam

On Friday our long weekend has begun, to which we have asked to visit the other volunteers in Bafoussam. Directly after breakfast we made a taxi on the way to Mile 17 (the starting point of the buses and bush taxis). There we bought for every 4,000 CFA (about € 6.11) a ticket to Bafoussam and appropriate elected seats. Sorry, saw them out on the paper plan significantly more spacious, but in the end we were then to fifth in a row, had been sitting in the only 4 people in Germany. But this narrowness in the means of locomotion Cameroon have to accept at home. After crossing over 6 hours we arrived at the entrance to 16 clock of Bafoussam. A short time later the other volunteers arrived Niels from Bamenda, the other however, to a bus station. We had planned to drive together to Baham. However, due to a misunderstanding, but then we are driven separately by Baham. Due to the lack of street names and numbers, it is always difficult with the meeting if you are in an unknown location. In Baham us Nico (another volunteer) picked up in the accommodation we have spent the night of Friday to Saturday. Previously, we have in the city center (more like village center) or dinner (Nudelomelett) indulgence. In
Nicos organization, a project for physically disabled children, then there was lot of activity before Nico sent the kids to bed.
was there early the next morning (6 clock) to get up, as we have planned a trip to Foumban to a traditional feast. At 7 clock we took a taxi from Baham after Bafoussam. When asked where the buses depart for Foumban us, the taxi driver immediately offered to bring us right up to Foumban. The initial price of 26 000 for a return trip, we have traded down to 20 000 CFA (about 30 €), which is still pretty expensive. On the way from Bafoussam Foumban after the Islamic influence on with the other Mosques visible. About 16 km behind the land of the Bamoun Bafoussam begins, the only predominantly Muslim ethnic group in southern Cameroon. Foumban in the city was full of people and there was a big traffic jam. In front of the Sultan's palace was a row dressed people who are slowly moving forward, forward probably the sultan presented gifts and then again from the Sultan Palace.

The Sultan Palace

The disguised man
We followed the people dressed up and found ourselves suddenly in a fenced area that was actually reserved for invited guests. On demand in a folder This brought us into the stands in the 1st Floor, from where we had a great view of the ceremony. It was noticeable that many "whites" were present at the festival and being there with their cameras tried everything.

Our view of the parade ground
The kings of the various ethnic groups in Cameroon are drawn on the square. Finally came the king of the Noun and the Minister of Justice. In the aftermath of the questions people were read to the king and the king answered the questions of the last time. Before the king left the place again, was still sacrificed a goat. We also left the place around us in search of food to make what turned out to be not so simple. At the roadside, where the different regions had their own stands, we found a few empty chairs and ate meat with couscous. When you pay, they wanted to take it out properly and required only 18 000 CFA (about 27 €) for a few bits of meat with couscous, and for each a drink. As we pretended not to have understood that price, they are equal to 9000 went down to CFA, which still was far too much. We then paid for all together 3000 CFA, so they have also been satisfied. With a somewhat drunken taxi driver who claimed to have drunk a beer, it went on the trip back to Bafoussam, where we arrived well. There I was for 9 weeks, once again a real supermarket (but without the black bread and fresh milk) to enter, where we have also met Leah, Hannah and Catherine. In the supermarket, did in fact brown bread (baguette), which has 10 weeks white bread ever done well. In the evening we (all weltwärts volunteers in Cameroon except Janna DEDs) in Moni (also volunteers from the DEDs) and there have enjoyed a very good birthday dinner. Sorry, Leah, Hannah and Catherine had very early to drive back home because the area at night should be pretty dangerous. We have other volunteers spent the night in Moni. The next morning it was
again soon stand up (even if only by 7 clock). With an aid worker and a Belgian, we have made in the morning on the way to the Ekom waterfalls, are the Del about 2 hours from Bafoussam. The last 10 km to the falls there was an uneven way in which one could go very slowly. From the areas on the road worldwide, came as we approached the cars, the children ran and called Cadeau, Cadeau, ... (gift). In the large SUVs, which were almost exclusively "white", I have not felt really comfortable. After some to an entrance fee of 2,000 CFA (about 3 €) is a stunning image provided by the waterfalls.

After we made from the top picture of this natural spectacle, we are a small part very slippery trail to the foot of the falls followed.

I front of the waterfall
After this hike my pants legs and shoes were full of mud. Back at the starting point, we have a great picnic, which has prepared the aid worker almost completely taken alone, to let us then make our way back. At first call again accompanied by Cadeau.
The night I was again able to spend with Nico, before I have made myself the next morning alone on the way back to Buea. On Bus station in Bafoussam I was surrounded alighting from a taxi right from 8 Cameroonians, which led me to their buses or which wanted to bring their company. With great effort I managed to keep my backpack with me and then I found Garanti Express can more or less directly to Buea to come. Actually, I was assured that we leave at 9:30 clock. But I was so absorbed in my book (only interrupted by the merchants who were running around everywhere to sell their products) that I've lost track of time completely out of the eye and we finally leave until around 12 Bafoussam clock. With the many small stops due to traffic control, payment of road user charges or entrances and exits of the bus was immediately surrounded by merchants who wanted to sell their goods (mostly fruit and vegetables). Towards the end of the journey there was still a police check, in which the cards were checked. In this case, the police officer did not put up with my certified copy of your passport, because he thought that these would be valid. A rider has repeatedly explained to him that everything is all right, but the police officer the document considered worthless. Finally came the second police officer and said that everything would be OK and we could go. While continuing the trip on the bus has a heated discussion, which formed probably turned this incident. My knowledge of French prevented, however, a discussion of the consequences. In muting genes, I had to leave the bus and a taxi transfer, which brought me up to Buea, where I arrived with nightfall.

How To Repair A Ironing Board

my tenth week in Cameroon

Hello,

the week did not bring much new with it. The computer classes begin to continue far too late and the children have little time on the computer. On Monday, the hour then fell even from all over, because the children came so late. After the children have written in the last week of the first set in a Word document, they were allowed this week, a slightly longer sentence (A computer is an electrical device, that accepts data (input) and is able to process the data into information called Write output). Needed for the students at least 10 minutes. There were problems - as in the previous week - the use of special keys, so when writing capital letters, spaces or parentheses. The short time is simply not enough to remember the relevant features and at home, most children have no opportunity to practice computer use.
was in German class, I practiced with the children of class 5b, the numbers from 1 to 100, and beyond. Here, the students quickly understood the practical construction of the figures and could thus also beyond the numbers cent, to express such as 464th
The School on Wheels project will continue as usual and we often make the same with the students. The students, however, bring homework when I have not yet occurred. Either there is no homework or students they do it at home too. Last week was the School on Wheels project, however, again particularly stressful because we were only three of us. Of the Dutch volunteer is traveling with his sister in Cameroon and could not help this. Fortunately, the School on Wheels project is on Thursday then failed, so we had time in the afternoon to pack our things for the weekend in Bafoussam and visit the Internet Cafe. Sorry, did not work the whole week, the Internet Cafe by UAC, because the new provider, the "lines" (the actually no lines but a radio links) are not connected has. A, problem that I am also not unknown in Germany, where a provider changes may partially result in a week-long loss of all telephone and Internet connections. Really wanted to believe this was my mentor Barclay, however. He sees the lack of punctuality is a problem for the development of Cameroon.
After computer time on Thursday afternoon was our shortened work week is over and we look forward to the weekend in Bafoussam, which begins tomorrow, Friday with a long bus trip.

My weekend in Douala

Hi,

Just after lunch on Friday we made our way to Douala. On the main street of Buea, we (Mauro, Mauro's sister, Advice, Lea and I) directly found a car which drove us for 2000 CFA (3,05 €) to Douala. Since we were six people, it was in the car on the back seat very tight. So the police can not directly see that formally seated in the car one too many, we should put the four of us on the back seat, which was extremely tight and any movement impossible. Nevertheless, we came to a police check (my first), in the first time I took a copy of my ID. Problems have occurred only because of the allegedly overloaded car, even though for Cameroon seems rather a person with little in the car was sitting. But after a short time after a bill has probably changed the owner, could go on. With Bonabéri reach the suburb of Douala, the road surface becomes worse. In the paved road there are large potholes and in some cases instead of tar is still dry and dusty sand with stones available. The further you get to Douala, the denser the traffic. The roadsides are lined with large factories, warehouses and trucks parked or scrap tires and automotive applications. Among other things, promotes a stationary truck on the roadside of Rewe for fresh consumption and on the street a van drives by the Rugby Club Leipzig. If these cars are beyond repair, they are "exploited" and the skeletons of rusting in the landscape before him, which always results in images such as this, which I took on the road from Douala to Buea:

In Douala the next we can spend in the apartment of Advice sister. After a brief stop in the apartment where we make fresh. Let's go to a bar where you sit directly above the sea and can enjoy his beer. Then we drive back into town where we eat at a crowded place to fish settle. And everywhere you walk around the peddlers sell their handkerchiefs, cigarettes, chewing gum, clothing, art, shoes and more. After a delicious fish, it goes back again to the apartment, where we once again dip slightly. Weather in Douala is really hard to bear (very hot, humid and sticky) and you're already sweaty again right after the shower. Against 23:30 clock we head towards the Maxim Club. Here we are almost the first and the dance floor still empty. However, there are pleasant temperatures, as the air conditioner performs well. Over time, also fills the club and we drink whiskey and cola. Just as Night Club in Limbe in the dance floor was surrounded with mirrors all around. Until about 3:30 clock we have a few friends from Mauro celebrated there before we went to another nightclub. Especially when it comes out of the first clubs to a power failure and for a short time (before the generator is turned on), it is dark and quiet. In another nightclub, we then spend more time clock to 6 am. Until then, the club has already cleared accordingly. It is striking again that amazing in the two night clubs many "whites" are. After a short night of Saturday hanging out one day longer to recover and. Around noon, there is a good breakfast and the afternoon we take Adivce to the Happy Sport and Leisure, a leisure center where there is a pool for bathing and swimming. The weather is just right for this, even if the water would like to have something cool can be. Also, the pool was so full that a swimming was almost impossible. In the evening we still get a nice delicious dinner, for then lie down relatively early. Late Sunday morning we set off down the way back to Buea. Arriving at the launch site of the cars we were asked by all sides toward our goal. For 2000 CFA per person we could find a car that drives us to Buea. Now it's wait until the car is filled with 6 passengers. Around it swarmed on the field there of people as hawkers or from their stalls from bread, handkerchiefs, cookies, and more sales. Closely pressed together, it went back to fourth in the back to Buea, where we arrived around noon. There, I've visited
after five days without internet again a cyber cafe. Because the had closed Cyber \u200b\u200bUAC, I went to another where I could enjoy for 250 CFA (0,38 €) per hour, a comparatively fast Internet connection. On Monday, will now operate the new connection in cyberspace by UAC. I hope this is just as fast. In the afternoon I've never met with Marcel and we ate something and I did something with it German learned. Thus, the exciting and impressive weekend was already over and tomorrow starts the work day again. Many were

The ninth weeks

Hey, it's not much new

a week. The lessons and the School on Wheels Project have now become a habit. In the computer hours, the students could use this time for the first time their knowledge to practical, in which they have written a sentence in the word processing program Microsoft Word. Problems were primarily with the "other keys", such as the caps lock key. I think through this first practical use of the computer they can view the various functions of special keys better note. Unfortunately, it is not possible, the children just to have time to try some things. Nor is it possible to release all children throughout the process of turning on, carry on starting a program to turn off the computer. This is what one is not enough time and secondly, not enough computers available. In December, will probably get 18 computers, so I hope that the number of computers in the computer room will be increased.
On Tuesday Mauro came with his girlfriend and his sister, who spent their holidays here, to Buea. We were at the School on Wheels Project on Wednesday and Thursday finally back in full strength, so we each could only work with the children of a class, which is much more pleasant than 20 children from different classes. Damn it, however, was a Wednesday in relation to the key. Only the key of Mauro's room is gone and untraceable at School on Wheels project, we only get the key for the small room. But even after the exchange of this key fit the lock, still only for the small space, so we got there with the classes 1 to 3 were working, while children in grades 4-6 entered the large room through the window openings. Large security brings the lock anyway, because there are enough large window frame without windows or grating there, so anyone can "walk" with no further into the room or climb better. At the end of the School on Wheels project, we were no longer possible to open the lock from 1.5 hours to finish with the same key. Somehow, the key that day bewitched. Fortunately I was able to return to my room without opening my accommodation problems and Mauro's door could be opened to me an appropriate tool with not too many difficulties. On Thursday, the School has
on Wheels Project worthy of the name. As occurred in the room where we usually work with the children has a meeting, we had the place to escape from it. Some banks, we were able to use out of the room, but this ranged from nowhere, so I with the second class, as well as my mentor Justine with the 5th was working class in the school bus.
In the evening we spoke with our boss Mr. Orock if we can go with Mauro to Douala, to celebrate his birthday. He actually wanted to go with us this week to Mamfe, where there is a second school of UAC under construction. Because he wanted to go until Sunday, it would be no problem for us was to come along. But since Mauro travels the week with his sister in Cameroon, we postponed the trip to Mamfe and I am now looking forward to an eventful weekend in Douala.

Skates Sharpeners For Sale

My weekend

Hi you, go

On Saturday we (as almost always), together with Marcel with taxis and bush taxis to the beach at Limbe. As we drive this time not directly but only take a bush taxi from Buea to Limbe and from there a taxi to Etisah Beach, this time we will pay only 1,100 CFA, in contrast to the 2,000 CFA last week. Unfortunately, the sun most of the time hiding under the clouds and wind, it is sometimes quite cool, so I just go into water. Otherwise I play Frisbee and Marcel shows us some new card games. In the evening we go to Peter the Hot Spot Restaurant, where there is the first time Burger, so I Supplements it right and order a double cheeseburger, which I feel like it is hard to digest. Surprisingly work at home, the shower, so you can still wash off the salt from the skin.
did on Sunday I found the alarm clock at 7:30, so I can walk before breakfast jog. When the alarm goes off, I would have liked to go back to sleep a little, but I can bring myself to jog for about 40 minutes to go. After breakfast I spent the morning in the house. In the afternoon we will meet again with Marcel, where we fried together in his kitchen up to 2m ² Plantains (cooking bananas) with omelettes. After a delicious meal, we play a little cards and make us before nightfall on the way to our accommodation. There, I still have my French homework for French class the next day.
This is then the weekend already over and tomorrow starts the next work week, which is then probably the busiest, because the School on Wheels Project now takes place four times a week.
Many Greetings
Jannik
